Ford’s education cuts come on backs of kids as 70 full-time jobs lost from the GECDSB

WINDSOR-ESSEX — The Ford government’s cuts to education have caused the loss of 70 full-time jobs at the Greater Essex County District School Board (GECDSB), cuts that will seriously hurt students, teachers, and education workers, say NDP MPPs for Windsor-Essex Lisa Gretzky (Windsor West), Percy Hatfield (Windsor-Tecumseh) and Taras Natyshak (Essex). The three released the following statement on behalf of the Official Opposition:

“Children and families count on schools being full of qualified and attentive adults to support kids. Doug Ford's cuts, which now include taking away another 70 full-time, front-line education workers at GECDSB, mean bigger class sizes, less one-on-one support for students, fewer education workers to support students with special needs, and fewer adults in every school.

We've heard from parents and students that are worried about how bigger class sizes and less help will hurt their kids day-to-day, and how having fewer course options and less mentorship in schools could seriously impact their kids' futures.

The GECDSB is the latest casualty in a string of Ontario school boards hit hard by the Ford government’s cuts to education. Hundreds of teachers and education workers all over the province have received lay-off notices, and the Ford Cuts have only just begun.

Children deserve more support and opportunity in school, not less. The NDP will keep up the fight, pushing for the Ford government to reverse these callous cuts to education. Children, teachers and education workers in our community deserve so much better.”
