QUEEN’S PARK – Ontario NDP MPPs Lisa Gretzky (Windsor West), critic for Mental Health and Addictions, and France Gélinas (Nickel Belt), critic for Health, released the following statement in response to reports that Doug Ford is set to take away critical public health supports from communities amidst an ongoing homelessness and addictions crisis:
“Anyone can be impacted by mental health and addictions,” said Gretzky. “Everyone, from health care professionals to mayors to librarians, is asking for a compassionate and fact-based plan to support our neighbours. Instead, Doug Ford has made the callous decision to take away a vital tool that saves lives.”
“Not a single community in our province is asking the government to take away existing resources and programs,” said Gélinas. “This government is cynically attacking health infrastructure and putting ideology over evidence. It’s time to fund the treatments and support programs we need so we can stop the loss of life.”
“We deserve safe and compassionate communities, where everyone has access to housing and mental health support,” said Gretzky. “It’s time for a government that leads with support, not stigma."
