QUEEN’S PARK – NDP MPP Lisa Gretzky (Windsor West) is pushing for legislation to protect workers in Windsor and Leamington who are taking job action for improved wages and job protections.
“Hardworking union members have been on strike for weeks in Windsor and Leamington,” said Gretzky. “They are fighting for job security, fair wages, job protection, and an end to the practice of outsourcing jobs.
In Leamington, Highbury Canco is busing in ‘scab’ workers to break the union’s picket line. The owners of Windsor Salt, Stone Canyon Industries have tried to force production. The Ontario NDP have consistently called for legislation to prevent these union-busting practices, and the Ford government has consistently blocked it.
Gretzky and the Ontario NDP stand in full solidarity with the 250 workers from Windsor Salt Mine (members of Unifor 240 and 1959) and over 400 workers from the Highbury Canco plant (members of UFCW Local 175).
“This government tries to claim they are ‘working for workers’, but actions speak louder than words,” said Gretzky. “The Ontario NDP have consistently proposed solutions to support unionized workers, and the Ford government refuses, undermining the collective bargaining process at every opportunity.”
“The Ontario NDP stand in support of unions across this province, and we will continue to fight for legislation that strengthens bargaining rights. One day longer – one day stronger.”
