MPP Gretzky demands support to save Stellantis

QUEEN’S PARK – MPP Lisa Gretzky (Windsor West) demanded support for Windsor’s Stellantis EV battery plant, following reports that the auto maker is considering pulling out of Ontario.

“The livelihoods of thousands of people in Windsor are on the line right now, and we need to do absolutely everything in our power to protect them,” said Gretzky. “An EV battery plant in Windsor means good paying jobs, with pensions and benefits, for skilled workers in Windsor’s proud auto industry. This plant is of huge importance to my community, and I am here to fight for it”.

Reports confirm that construction has stopped on the Stellantis EV battery plant site. Stellantis indicated that they have begun implementing contingency plans following a lack of support from the Canadian and Ontario governments.

“This premier has a track record of not acting when auto jobs were leaving this province, as we saw with Nemak, the third shift at Windsor Assembly Plant, and with General Motors in Oshawa”, said Gretzky. “The families and workers of Windsor-Essex deserve a government that will do everything in its power to protect current auto jobs and secure new ones.”

Stellantis is set to provide more than 2500 jobs for Windsor.

“Premier Ford must do everything in his power to support Windsor workers and ensure we don’t lose this investment", said Gretzky. “He can’t continue to pass the buck to the federal government – I am calling on him to show some leadership and step up to the plate before it’s too late.”
