WINDSOR – NDP Shadow Minister for Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade Catherine Fife and MPP Lisa Gretzky (Windsor West) are calling on the Ford government to protect auto workers and invest in the sector:
“Job losses in this critical sector have major implications, for Windsor and beyond. One job loss in an assembly plant can lead to as many as ten more at part suppliers,” said Fife.
“Our economy is already taking a big hit with Trump's most recent tariff hike on all Canadian goods to 35%. Despite growing economic uncertainty and ongoing job losses, we still don’t have a plan from the Premier to protect workers and create good jobs. In order to weather this ‘Trump Storm,’ we must strategically invest in our auto sector and fight to keep these good, stable jobs in Ontario.”
MPP Gretzky added, “As a wife of an auto worker, I know firsthand that auto workers, their families, and communities are facing serious anxiety and worry right now. Their ability to put food on the table for their families is at the mercy of Donald Trump's unpredictable whims. Windsor’s unemployment rate rose to 11.2 percent this summer and if we don’t act soon, it will only get worse.
“Workers in Windsor and across this province deserve a government that fights for their jobs and is looking out for them. I stand shoulder-to-shoulder with them, and will fight like hell to protect every single job.”
In Windsor, unionized auto workers at Titan Tool and Die Limited were locked out by management, after the factory laid off workers and moved equipment to the United States.
