Windsor families need rapid tests now: Gretzky

Published on December 17, 2021

WINDSOR – NDP MPP Lisa Gretzky is calling on Doug Ford to provide Windsor with more rapid antigen tests (RATs) and to include Windsor in the government’s holiday pop-up testing campaign, as Windsor faces a rapid test shortage.

“Families in Windsor deserve access to COVID-19 tests to make sure they stay safe and healthy, and don’t spread the virus as they visit with loved ones over the holidays,” said Gretzky. “Yet with Omicron spreading rapidly, Ford has left Windsor residents unprepared and scrambling to find the rapid tests they need.”

Despite the rapid growth in COVID-19 cases, Windsor-Essex Region has only two LCBO locations with rapid antigen tests, and both locations were out of stock early on Friday according to recorded phone messages and store signage. There are no pop-up testing locations scheduled for Windsor-Essex.

“Windsor residents are worried, and they’re frustrated after travelling to these locations only to find out the tests were not available,” said Gretzky. “Yet again, we’re seeing Ford provide too little too late. He dragged his feet for weeks, refusing to provide people rapid tests and now we’re seeing his last minute plan to distribute the tests failing in real time. Windsor families are being left to fend for themselves, they deserve so much better.
