QUEEN’S PARK — Lisa Gretzky, NDP MPP for Windsor West, said local families, children, and sports organization are asking for answers from the Ford government on the safe return of outdoor leagues in the Windsor area. Gretzky is asking for experts to make a public recommendation on a return to kids’ sports.
"Children and youth want to be able to return to the diamonds and fields as soon as possible," Gretzky said. "Our youth have suffered from anxiety, isolation, and mental health challenges for over a year now while they have endured the government's inaction and refusal to invest to keep their schools safe. It's not too late to give kids the hope of playing sports."
The Ford government’s Science Table has said outdoor activity is safe, but league sports are postponed until the next stage of reopening. Gretzky said the government should consult with public health experts and let thousands of families and kids know what’s going to happen this season.
"I met with a number of youth sport organizations in my community and they have told me there is so much uncertainty when it comes to getting back on the field,” said Gretzky. “They fear if a plan isn't put into place now, they will lose an entire season. The Ford government must create a plan now, and consult with the experts about how soon we can get kids back into their leagues, and playing their sport. Families in Windsor are waiting for an answer.”
