Statement from MPP Gretzky and MPP Hatfield on resumed Transit Windsor service

Published on April 27, 2020

WINDSOR - MPP Lisa Gretzky (Windsor West) and MPP Percy Hatfield (Windsor-Tecumseh) have released the following statement in response to the City of Windsor's announcement that Transit Windsor will be resuming modified service beginning Monday, May 4:

"We are relieved to see that the City of Windsor will be joining municipalities across Canada in providing public transportation for essential travel. Hundreds of Windsor residents signed petitions and contacted the Mayor's office to express their deep concern with the decision to shut down public transit, and we want to thank them for their continued advocacy. We also want to recognize the support of Ontarians across the province who joined the call to demand that public transportation be available to all as a critical service.

When the Mayor decided to shut down buses last month, without a recommendation from the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit, we raised concerns as it left essential workers without a means to get to work, and many residents without a way to get to medical appointments or the grocery store. While we are happy to see that Windsor residents will again have a reliable and safe option to make essential trips, we hope that going forward decisions of this magnitude will be made with greater care for community members who fully rely on public transit."
