WINDSOR - Two veteran Windsor-area MPPs have been named deputy speakers at the Ontario Legislative Assembly.
In a rare summer sitting, Lisa Gretzky (Windsor-West) and Percy Hatfield (Windsor-Tecumseh), were two of three NDP MPPs to be named deputy speakers of the 42nd parliament, serving as presiding officer during debates in the house. Having been appointed to the position of deputy speaker by NDP leader Andrea Horwath and recognizing the tremendous duty of the position, Gretzky and Hatfield were both honoured to be given the assignment of regularly presiding over the business of house.
“I’m honoured to have been appointed to such a notable role,” Gretzky said. “As the legislative assembly’s referee during house proceedings, I hope to ensure decorum is maximized during debate and that we maintain the highest levels of civility and courteousness.”
“I am well aware of the immense responsibilities of serving as the deputy speaker of the legislative assembly and look forward to serving the house in the same fairness and impartiality that I have served the communities of Windsor-Tecumseh over the last five years.” Hatfield said.
Gretzky plunged into the new role on Thursday, while Hatfield is expected to sit in the Speaker’s chair next week. Both members are assuming the title for the first time in their capacity as elected members.
